Opening Symbiosen
Wednesday 20.09.2023, 18:00
As part of the Festival FRAGILE, raumlaborberlin and Raul Walch are creating symbiotic structures in participatory workshops, that engage with the buildings of the Schauspielhaus Wuppertal and its immediate surroundings. Symbiosen was conceived, designed, sewn and built in a two-week workshop on site with citizens, students and creative people from Wuppertal and the world.
A formerly expensive living room cabinet becomes trash as soon as it is taken apart and put on the street. Every day, people in Wuppertal buy thousands of new garments and carry their old ones to the collection containers. A positive value becomes a negative value: trash? Symbiosen works with this material: old clothes and fabrics, old furniture, wall coverings that have become superfluous, etc. We consider these elements the new raw materials of a Circular Economy. Analogous to symbiotic and parasitic organisms, we develop strategies, processes, and tectonics that can give new life to this material: cleaning, sorting, cutting, re-sewing, dyeing, stacking, weaving, linking, sawing, screwing, etc. Creatures and structures emerge that enter into symbiotic relationships with the partially closed Schauspielhaus and its heterogeneous surroundings.
